LINCOLN, Neb. –The Nebraska Optometric Association (NOA), today urged consumers to schedule an annual eye exam before January 1 in order to take advantage of flexible spending accounts and insurance deductibles.

“Most people know the value of having their furnace checked each year. And they realize that for healthy teeth they should visit their dentist annually,” said Dr. Corey Langford, NOA President.

“Yet many of the same people put off going to the eye doctor because they don’t recognize how important an annual eye exam is for maintaining clear vision and overall health,” Langford said.

If you haven’t had time to get an eye exam yet this year, now would be a good time. If you have a flexible spending account, most employers require funds to be used by December 31. In addition, if you or a member of your family has already met your insurance deductible, it’s a good idea to schedule your medical visits, including annual eye exams, before January 1.

According to the National Eye Institute, more than 11 million Americans have an uncorrected visual impairment that can impact their quality of life, and in some cases lead to more serious eye conditions.

“Good visual health is critical to your quality of life. It allows you to see the world around you and enjoy everyday activities like driving, reading, watching TV and playing sports,” Langford said.

“That’s why it is important to see an eye doctor regularly. Those individuals who do not visit their eye doctor on a regular basis are putting their vision and quality of life at risk,” Langford said.
